They are protected under national legislation across the island. Although newts are widespread throughout Ireland, suitable habitat for the species is in decline. Newts breed in ponds and areas of standing water with suitable terrestrial vegetation cover close by. Ponds are exceptionally vulnerable to drainage, eutrophication and infill. To ensure that ponds on your development site comply with legislative requirements, we can carry out an appropriate newt survey. Our surveyors have extensive experience of newt surveys (under license) as part of development proposals.
Newt surveys can only be carried out between mid-March and mid-June, and should aim to establish whether newts are present in the pond and surrounding terrestrial habitat (within 200m).
