Our experienced ecologists are able to undertake surveys for otters using non-invasive survey techniques, including; camera trapping. searching for otter spraints (droppings), dens, footprints, slides and other signs of otter activity such as feeding couches. Blackstaff Ecology can undertake a survey of potential development land for otters, as part of a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal. More detailed surveys can also be conducted in order to inform mitigation strategies or compensation plans for a development applications or EIA's.

Illegal activities against otters in Ireland and Britain

As a European Protected Species, otters are fully protected under the national legislation of all EU member states. In Ireland & Britain It is illegal to:

  • Deliberately capture, injure, kill, or disturb otters
  • Intentionally or recklessly obstruct access to any structure/place used for shelter or protection, or
  • Damage or destroy a breeding site or resting place
